2. The Innovention Will Honour Hans Moretti

We are very close to releasing details of another major name to
appear at The Innovention taking place from 4 -7 October 2010 at
the Suncoast Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. We are also delighted
to announce that The Innovention this year will honour Master
Illusionist Hans Moretti.

Hans is now suffering from Alzheimers and is being cared for by
his son Peter. We are hoping to have Peter and other members of
the Moretti family with us in Las Vegas for The Innovention. It
is also possible that subject to his health at that time, Hans
himself might also be there. Hans & Helga Moretti were without
doubt two of the greatest magical performers of all time.

5. Finished Reading Beating A Dead Horse

I have just finished reading 'Beating a Dead Horse ' The Life and
Times of Jay Marshall' by Alexander "Sandy" Marshall.

It was a special pleasure for me because I once stayed with Jay
for three days at Magic Inc the shop, way back in 1974. Jay and
Frances treated me like an old friend although I had not ever met
them. It was probably the most memorable time in magic that I
have ever had.

This book is exceptional. Sandy has written with love, honesty
and passion about his dad.

As Dick Cavett says on the back cover:

"This is one of those rare, thoroughly satisfying books. Even if
you didn't know of the wonderful Jay Marshall, it is a delight.
For those who only knew his work, they can now know him. For all
lucky enough to have met and known Jay, it is a must."

Alan, something I had not been prepared for was the surprising
photo(s) on page 368!

As well as a rather revealing shot there is also a photo of the
famous 'Billy McComb door' which led to a room named 'The Jay
Marshall Suite'. Just to the left of this white nameplate if you
look very closely, you will see that there is a signature which
says;

'Mike Easterbrook, the first kiwi to sleep here'

Anyone who is the least bit interested in magic should get
themselves a copy. I could not put it down.

I first want to thank my good friend S Patrick Toman for
suggesting this topic and for also sharing with me his own
personal story and how he learned from it. I really felt strongly
that it is something we all have experienced before and something
we can learn from. So thank you my friend for the topic
suggestion.

I think as a children's and family entertainer, we spend so much
of our time making sure we know the technique, staging and
presentation aspects of what we do. We work hard because we want
our magic to go over well and we want to "wow" our audiences. We
work out every little angle and rehearse every line. But do we
ever stop to realize that in all this learning, do we take time
out to learn our audience?

Hmm weird question isn't it? Do we ever take time to learn and
study the audience we perform for? So much of what we do is
always a one way street. It is always about us and what WE need
to do to get folks to like US and OUR show. But the real power is
understanding how your audience thinks and how they want to be
entertained. You need to learn the psychology involved behind
that audience.

Psychology is a wonderful thing if you really start to learn it.
So many magicians do not give it a second thought. However, there
is real power in understanding it, grasping it and utilizing it.
There are reasons behind why people do the things they do. There
are reasons why they may react a certain way under a certain set
condition or situation.

As a family entertainer, I spend a lot of time working with and
performing around children. I think it is safe to say that many
of us have or do on a regular basis. But do we really KNOW this
audience. We may think we do, but a lot of focus starts and ends
with how to make kids laugh. There is a LOT more to it than that.

Have you ever made a child cry? Be honest with yourself. Be very
honest. I can admit that I did and I have. But do you know WHY
they did or do you shrug it off as just "one of those things"?
You really should never shrug it off. If it happened, there is a
reason why it happened and in many cases it is a child
psychological thing. It gets back to learning your audience.

Always train yourself to learn from every experience. If you made
a child cry, then take a step back and try and figure out why
that may have happened. What did you do that caused it and what
can you do differently to change it so it may not happen again.
It is an awareness that you need to have and start to develop.

In some cases, a magician might use a child to get a laugh and
continue to do so during a routine. The wand broke in the kid's
hands or the box breaks apart and the card is not the right one
inside. As magicians we can certainly use a child for a laugh and
can learn to do it properly. However, we must also learn our
audience enough to know what age of a child may be best for any
routine we do.

If a young child may react poorly to an effect, we need to be
aware of that and to make part of the routine remembering to
select a child of a certain age. It can also mean learning to
test your audience by watching for reactions and how they react
to you in the beginning of your show. A simple warm up routine
can be structured to get them laughing and get them enjoying your
show. It can tell them how to react during your show as well.
However, it can also be a great time for you to learn the
audience.

As you do your warm ups, start to see how each kid responds. Are
there those that are laughing and smiling? Are there some that
are very shy and hiding behind others. Are there others that may
be a bit overly anxious. If we can train ourselves into this
learning process we can often times avoid bad situations.

The other key about learning our audience is that you never stop
learning. People change and as they do we must change also. We
must be aware that every child is different and every person is
different as well. We learn to take this information and utilize
it. This way when a situation does occur, we know how best to
handle it so that no audience member ever leaves the show
anything less than totally entertained.

TB1 : Your first book on Magic was entitled, "BEYOND DECEPTION -
The Theory & Practice of Creating Original Magic." It elevated
the Art and indeed took it beyond the usual barriers. Please
share with us the motivation that spurred the inspiration &
indeed, also a brief overview of its content .....

TB2 : "Beyond Deception" is the first book of a series dedicated
to the idea that magic is more than deceiving people, and
offering techniques and ideas that magicians can use to create
magic that is unique to themselves, entertaining, and powerfully
effective in moving their audiences emotionally.

My motivation was initially to bring some of the really powerful
techniques I had learned from my own teachers in acting, dance,
and directing for the theatre to performing magicians.

Many of us come to magic first because we want to know how the
tricks are done. Later on we learn to love being able to
entertain others by fooling them...but not that many of us move
beyond that into the realm of what I think of real magic. That's
the ability to give our audience real magical experiences, with
the same kind of emotional and intellectual depth as Broadway
theatre or the opera, or of great films and novels. I'm fortunate
to work with a few magicians who DO understand this, and I'd
really like to see more of them. The books and workshops are an
effort to move more and more magicians into that direction.

TB1: You were kind enough to share with me that you are now
working on another book about Wizards. The word conjures up
various interpretations. You and I discussed this at some length.
It is not just semantics, fictional or Druidic is it?

TB2: No Tony, it is not just semantics. My use of the word
"Wizard." I suppose it's mostly a personal preference and chosen
partly because in the popular culture of today, it has some
meaning, due to not only the Merlin / Druidic stories, but also
the more recent Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. I like it
that it includes the word "wise," and so refers to wise men and
women.

However.it's intended to include quite a range of types: good &
bad, sorcerers, seers, tricksters, priests, sages, many artists,
inventors, etc. A kind of catch-all for those who use arcane
knowledge and powers to be more effective in the world.

I have, for want of a better word, "ulterior" motives for the
book: I look at it as a way to pique the interests of many who
may not have considered that a wizard could be a real life, flesh
and blood person, rather than a fictional character. I strongly
believe that our world today needs more of us to begin taking on
the responsibilities of real wizards. And so, the work done by
real wizards becomes more important every day.

On a more personal level, I'd love the book to be the key to
unlock certain aspects of my personality. I'd like to begin
working as a speaker/ performer myself, both teaching and
entertaining groups by performing my own (not yet created) Way of
the Wizard talk/ show. It's the part of that process I find I can
work on right now. An hour here, two hours there.with luck it
will be roughly complete towards the end of March - all while I'm
continuing to work to keep my clients busy and well-fed.

TB1: I for one and I am quite certain, others too, eagerly look
forward to its publication. I am honored and flattered that you
referred to me recently as a true Wizard. You were kind enough to
make me privy to some of your thinking. Yes, it will be in the
book, but meanwhile , can I persuade you to publicly share a
pre-view of some of your thoughts?

TB2: Well ..sure, some of the things on my mind that I can share
in a sort of stream of conscious way are as follows :- Although I
defined it a few moments ago, my current definition of what is a
wizard is somewhat in flux. It's one of those words that everyone
seems to have their own definition for.

Some ceremonial magicians are offended that I'd ever consider a
trickster magician a wizard - they have their own narrower
definition, and have worked very hard to make themselves fit that
definition.

My definition is a bit wider, and would include people like
Paramahansa Yogananda, and as I have already mentioned, Steve
Jobs, and Albert Einstein. The closest I can come now to anything
succinct in the way of defining what a real wizard is would be
something like this: "A wizard is someone who accomplishes
extraordinary things by unseen and often seeming unconnected
actions."

I don't think all wizards are good. I don't think all wizards are
bad. Wizards are wizards. Good ones. Bad ones. Adolf Hitler was a
wizard of sorts. On the other hand, so was Mohandas Gandhi. So I
suspect I'll upset a few folks who think of Dumbledore as the
quintessential wizard and representative of good. I see it more
like the idea of a king (who often had their own wizards) - it
defines a role and way of wielding power - not the ultimate value
of how that power is used.

TB1: Yes indeed. The power. The power to affect change, sometimes
good, sometimes bad. Tobias, you are, with your remarkable
ability, (i.e power) going beyond platitudes and the obvious,
thus making people re-define their acceptance not only of
perception but also the very process by which they perceive.

TB2: Yes. That's it; exactly right. That is why the working title
, which may well be its final title, is tentatively called
"Wizards Ways." I realized that, as someone who has spent his
entire career working in the performing arts and the past 20
years almost exclusively with magical performers, and as someone
always fascinated by the link between performance, magic and the
occult (which means "hidden"), I've learned a few things that may
be of great use to people who are not primarily performers. The
book is an attempt to create an entertaining way of getting some
of this information across, and inspiring others to take it up
and use it to transform the world in ways it needs to be
transformed.

TB1: You and I have talked about this before, I certainly
empathize with your view. It is too easy for some to refer to us
as iconoclastic but my contention is that by being iconoclastic,
we can stimulate thought and hence creativity and ultimately -
much needed change.

TB2: Yes Tony. Everything has to be tested and to some extent
pulled apart. The process so far has been a little humbling - I
keep discovering I know less than I thought I did and that in
itself is exciting. I discover that there are levels upon levels
of depth to lots of subjects I thought I know all about.

I've been fortunate to have many, many people share their own
"wizard" stories with me, and a few friends who don't mind
pulling apart everything I've written and questioning me on it --
which makes me think about it all, clarifying my thoughts more.

TB1:Yes. Clarity of thought. This is the ultimate goal of The
Wizard. You told me that your book does not just put forth theory
but actually carries examples of how to be effective as a
Wizard ...

TB2: Yes. It contains Teaching Techniques. Part of my intention
and purpose for writing this book is to provide readers with new
tools they can use to transform themselves and their
communities -- so once they've read a story where a wizard uses a
particular power, I'll be teaching them how they can develop and
use that power themselves.

A simple example that magicians will understand is the use of
mnemonics to aid our memory, and several examples of how this can
be used to amazing effect.
There are some amazing techniques out there that a wizard can use
to influence others. Psychological levers like the use of
reciprocity, priming and what we now call NLP are examples.

There are many methods for inducing trance, or entering into
meditative states that allow us to communicate with our inner
selves in ways that achieve amazing results. I'll be exploring
some of these in the book and telling stories of some practical
uses for them.

TB1: Stories. The telling of tales. Parables. What a great spell
the power, cadence and very sound of words can have. Magical,
real magic!

TB2: I believe the best way to engage any kind of an audience is
through stories. Dry prose explanations (like this one) are
interesting if they spark a lively discussion - but it's hard to
make them interesting for a reader, and easy for what they say to
be misconstrued and not understood. Because of that, I'm trying
to do as much of the book as possible as a series of stories.

Some of the stories will be the stories of real people. I'm
fortunate to have several friends I would consider to be real
wizards, and the book will include some stories about them.
In addition, I'll be pursuing some remarkable people I know of
who are unquestionable real wizards. Steve Jobs, Dr. Hew Len are
two that come to mind immediately.

There will be other stories that are pure fiction, designed to
demonstrate a particular wizard power or way of learning things.
I'm having fun with these.

TB1: Fun. That's another key word. I think you rather liked my
phrase, "Wizards love the mischief of laughter". By that I mean a
good thing ..spreading joyous and positive things. Creating fun &
laughter and sharing it is a very "Wizardry" thing to do. The
art of magic is in the entertainment, it can be fun it can be
serious but whatever it is, it must convey meaning or the
performance is dry, don't you agree?

TB2: Yes Tony. I do. Jeff and others like him convey this in
their performances. Stories are not just words. It is also
movement. If you think about it, art is all about making choices.
What story will I tell? What characters are in the story? What do
they sound like? What will they wear? Will I mention the weather
/ setting / other characters in telling the story? Will my props
be given characters? How fast or slow will I talk / move etc.?
Will this be better with music in the background? If so, what
music...the choices are endless. At the risk of repeating myself,
Art is about making choices. Once you're aware of all the choices
to be made, you can start making them and thus building your own
unique creation.

8. Broken Wand - Lawrence M. Parsons

Lawrence M. Parsons, age 65, of Buckingham Street, Waterbury, CT
died Thursday, February 4, 2010 at Waterbury Hospital after a
brief illness.

Mr. Parsons was born April 11, 1944 in Waterbury, CT and is the
son of Lois (Miner) Parsons and the late Lawrence R. Parson. He
was a graduate of Watertown High School and attended broadcasting
school in NYC. He was a career entertainer holding various
positions in the entertainment industry. He enjoyed performing at
many events, clubs, and parties as J.J. the Clown. He was a
skilled magician and was President of the Society of American
Magicians Assembly # 29 in Waterbury, CT. He was also an active
member of the Masons Lodge serving as Past Master of
Liberty-Continental Lodge # 76, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite and was
a member of the First Congregational Church of Waterbury.

Besides his mother, Lois of Terryville, CT, Lawrence is survived
by his sister, Marcia Anderson of Benson, VT, his nephew Dean
Acquaviva and his wife Danielle of Plainville, as well as several
cousins and many friends.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday February 7, 2010 at 2
pm at the Casey-O'Donnell Funeral Home, 1581 East Main Street, in
Waterbury, CT, with the Rev. Kenneth Frazier officiating. There
are no calling hours. Burial will be held privately at the
convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations in
memory of Mr. Parsons can be made to the First Congregational
Church of Waterbury, 222 West Main Street, Waterbury, CT 06702.

Kent Olsson, 65 years, Malmö has suddenly died.

Kent Olsson was one of Malmö's largest Doldis. He might as well
have been a celebrity, then mourned and missed by many more
people today, but he chose himself after a careful consideration
at a young age to use his talent and his broad knowledge inwards
instead of outwards.

We who were his friends can now say that Malmö has lost one of
its most original and interesting people. Kent was more than a
professor skilled in their major subject - that is a very real
magic professor, probably the best in the world of theoretical
magic. Kent was the magician who never stood on a stage.

Edet bitter about his death, reminiscent of the Swedish poet Paul
Andersson, legend who was one of Metarmofosgroup founding in
Paris in the 1950s. In a lair in the south of Stockholm, he
explained to me that the greatest poet or writer in the world
never comes out with a book, because such a masterpiece is never
finished. It must be revised and improved as long as the author
lives, and then burned the script as a last expression of the
deceased ...

The same applies to a thinker and sages as Kent Olsson. He took
an early stage name Clay Adams (there are decks of cards with the
name of) and work on a variety act, which would become world
class. He studied everything from Konstantin Stanislavsky, "An
actor's work with himself" for almost all books Ionomer the
magical literature. He was so explosive lessons in the subject
Showbusiness that he could live large to participate in only in
the European and American television channels quiz shows.

In Kent's apartment on Baltzarsgatan took the small miracle, that
only the innermost circle of friends, a handful of people,
experienced. His collection of books on magic, enchantment,
illusion, mind reading, telekinesis, mesmerism and hypnotism
weighed on the shelves in Prussian perfection. They were not
borrowed, but I just read by the master himself.

Same thing with Kent's (read: Clay Adams) lavish, glittering
magic props, starved of spotlights, and his elegant tuxedo, with
room for parrots, pigeons, decks and rabbits. All the scene
numbers were built by the world's leading, sworn precision
engineer and Carving - all were the master craftsmen, as Carl
Owen, Thayer, Okito and Conradi Horster, to name a few. None of
them are alive today.

Kent Olsson became mountainous account when he saw Hector el Neco
Castles in the school auditorium as a boy. He became the first
bag carrier, eventually advanced to the sorcerer's apprentice and
was soon as a child in the house. Now Kent knew what he would be,
but to support himself, he took employment at the then
Telecommunications Authority,

Kent shared the first out telephone books and was responsible for
maintenance in the future vandalized telephone booths. Constantly
re-educated himself. With some exaggeration one can say that he
read instead of sleeping. He studied law at Lund University in
the evenings after a hard day's work. Next time we see him
because of Telia's legal department, where he was representing
the enterprise is in trials with great success.

Sometime in the 40s was Kent Olsson suddenly SKILLED. It was as
if he had been told "Your mailbox is full", perhaps in the form
of a lidnersk crazy? He became sages overnight. The book he was
reading the night before was in German and was called
"Vollständiger Lehrkursus des Hypnotismus in aller seinen Phasen"
by psychologist Hans Ertl. It was printed in fracture style in
Leipzig in the 1890s. Could it be a clue?

When National Encyclopedia was appointed to the living
encyclopaedia Kent Olsson NE's expert on witchcraft, magic and
other entertainment from A to Z, a task he handled with great
ease and elegance. He was also advisor and consultant in many
other contexts.

Now he conjured to circle of friends, and he could answer the
questions any time as long as they were by enchantment, magic,
circus (he was a member of the Swedish Circus Academy), film,
opera and theater do. The big pros turned to him with questions
in the higher magic, it could be Swedish celebrities as Joe
Labero or Carl-Einar Häckner or even more famous quantities from
the outside world and in particular theaters.

On the evening before he fell asleep for good, he had a history
of clots in the lungs, I had a few short lines on the computer:
"I have listened to Luciano Pavarotti all evening and compared
him with our own Jussi. What great artists! My eyes were full of
tears, so moved was I. But one cannot help it: Jussi Bjorling
had more ore in the Meeting! There are no strikes Jussi, he had
barely breathe with the diafragma! Nighty, Night! "

The most tragic is that perhaps Kent Olsson takes with him the
secrets of the grave. I am thinking mainly of the notes which he
brought a lifetime.
There you have it again: the book never comes out.

to meet and thank many of the early members who have worked over

the years to make the Castle a success. Arlene Larsen has

All of our past Presidents will be on hand to receive their past

The one-hour special will air in the United States on Monday,

Endemol USA. This is the same company that several years ago

produced the short-lived series Chains of Love, in which a

contestant would spend 24 hours a day literally chained to four

members of the opposite sex in an attempt to see with whom they

would be most compatible.

Does Jethro end up with one of the Conveyor Belt of Love

contestants? Participants are forbidden to reveal the outcome of

their appearance until the show has aired, so you'll have to

watch and see. But seriously, has any woman ever failed to get

turned on after witnessing a guy chop off his own hand?

Street Magic

A thirty-second commercial for the Ford Mustang featuring Steve

Wyrick performing an escape on the Las Vegas Strip is promised to

start airing nationally after the New Year. The effect, which was

taped just before Thanksgiving, was the brainchild Steve and Don

Wayne, with Doug Leferovich. A three-minute version is also part

of an Internet campaign and can be seen on Ford's website (#10 of

the "10 Unleashed" videos).

5. The Historic Balboa Theatre San Diego, California

The 82nd Annual I.B.M. Magic Convention will be held in San

Diego, July 6-10 next summer. One of the highlights will be the

theatre used to present three very special one-of-a-kind Gala

Shows. I thought you would be interested in a bit of background.

Following a lengthy "intermission," San Diego's historic Balboa

Theatre has been newly restored to its original Mediterranean and

Spanish revival-style splendor and is once again taking center

stage in the city's downtown arts and culture scene.

Built in 1924, the Balboa played host to hundreds of famous

Vaudeville acts and ushered in the era of talking motion

pictures.

Today, the 1,400-seat theater, which is located at Fourth Avenue

and E Street, adjoining Horton Plaza and the Gaslamp Quarter of

the city, is listed in the National Register of Historic

Locations.

Its colorful tiled dome, elaborate arched ceilings and two unique

waterfalls on either side of the stage make the theater a

dramatic venue not only for the performing arts, but for

corporate functions and other convention-related activities.

The Balboa Theatre is managed and operated by San Diego Theatres,

Inc., which also manages and operates the 2,967-seat San Diego

Civic Theatre.

It took 22 years and $26.5 million, but the curtain rises again

on the historic Balboa Theatre in San Diego, California. The

vaudeville-era theatre has been restored to its original 1924

splendor, including the decorative ceiling and walls, original

chandeliers and working waterfalls. Enhanced public amenities

and state-of-the-art mechanical, electrical and performance

systems were installed. The 1,339-seat structure is listed on the

National Register of Historic Places. This will be an amazing

venue for the International Brotherhood of Magicians!

History - San Diego's Balboa Theater

Birth to Rebirth

1924: Birth. The theater opened and thrived as it hosted

nationally known vaudeville acts including the Sunkist Beauties

and Fachon & Marco who performed on opening night.

1930: Change of pace. Modest renovation to enhance the Spanish

Revival architecture ushered in the next phase of the renamed El

Teatro Balboa. For ten years, the theater showed Spanish-language

cinema and stage shows.

1942(?): Patriotism. The theater gave itself over to the U.S.

Navy in early days of World War II. The office space was

converted to housing to help accommodate the swelling ranks of

the U.S. military. America as a whole recovered quickly from

WWII, but the Balboa struggled.

1959: Near Death. The historic Balboa was slated to be demolished

to make room for a parking lot. It was saved by Russo Enterprises

who operated the theater as an action-movie venue.

1972 Saved. The City of San Diego places the building on the

local Register of Historical Places.

1985: City Property. The city acquired the Balboa Theatre through

eminent domain and placed it under the control of the Centre City

Development Corporation (CCDC). The CCDC was charged with saving

the Balboa building but did not have the funds to renovate. The

building sat, protected but neglected.

1986: Community Support. A volunteer organization, The Balboa

Theatre Foundation, was created to get a renovation project

funded and started.

1992: Registered. The Foundation successfully lobbied to get the

Balboa on the National Register of Historic Places and

fundraising began in earnest.

2002: City Moves. After numerous attempts from 1985 to begin

privately-funded renovation and operation, the CCDC stepped up to

the plate in October of 2002 and authorized rehabilitation.

2003: Architects Chosen. In August 2003, CCDC hired Westlake Reed

Leskosky (Phoenix, Arizona) as the project architect and the

design phase began.

2005: Work begins. In April of 2005, hammer was put to concrete

as selective demolition and abatement-construction officially

began.

2005: Earthquakes? Here? A major hurdle in the restoration was a

required seismic retrofit. All were concerned that the difficulty

of bringing the building up to modern seismic safety codes might

doom the project. However, in July of 2005, the hurdle was jumped

and the building's future was assured.

2006: Craftsman and Artisans. In January of 2006, renovation and

restoration began. An extraordinary effort to bring the theater

back to its opening finery -- including two waterfalls -- is

underway.

2008: Opening Night. In the Winter of 2008, the beautiful Balboa

Theatre once again opened its doors to provide San Diegans and

visitors with great performances. The Balboa Theatre shines

again. In July 2008, the Foundation presented "Act II", allowing

supporters the opportunity to see the restored Organ console for

the first time.

2009: "Act III". The 1929 Wonder Morton Organ -- one of only four

such instruments remaining in existence -- makes make its debut

performance on September 27, 2009.

2010: I.B.M. The International Brotherhood of Magicians take over

the Balboa Theater July 8, 9 and 10 for three very special shows

that are part of the greatest annual magic convention on earth.

6. More Remarkable Magic #23 - Nick Lewin

New Year's Resolutions.

With the passing of another year I have arrived at the point when

I make my magical New Year's resolutions. I always do this, as I

am very persistent in my habits. I know I am persistent because I

have been making most of these resolutions year after year. This

year I am really going to follow through though. Really.

I thought I would share my list this year and it might inspire me

to less consistency and more success. There is something about

the 31st of December that gives one the fresh page in a fresh

book feeling. With a new confidence in my heart I will set forth

these resolutions before February when they become automatically

relegated to suggestions.

Resolution #1

I really, really am going to make up my rope tricks with new

rope. I sometimes look at my set of three to one ropes and gasp.

I have always been a sentimental performer with a strong streak

of superstition. This results in a passionate desire never to

change any of my working props unless I really have to when they

fall apart. Sometimes I look at the various ropes, cards and

silks I use in my show and I am shocked at the state they are in.

The only excuse for props that look dirty is extreme poverty and

not superstition.

Resolution #2

I will not send out any more working photos that are seriously

out of date. There is an increasing tendency on my part to use

older photos of myself and also to avoid new photo sessions. I

don't know why it is but since I turned fifty I feel that photos

of me in my forties are a more accurate reflection of the way I

look than ones taken after I was fifty. There seems to me there

is a reverse Dorian Gray effect to my 8x10 glossies. While I am

at it I will discard the mountains of brochures promoting my act

that are clogging up major arteries in my closets. Let's face it

I will never send any of them out and if I did I wouldn't want

any show they would bring in.

Resolution #3

I am finally going to discard all the old Norm Nielson rubber

doves that I keep in my cupboard in a cardboard box. None of them

still look remotely like any dove you could encounter anywhere

but in a horror movie. They do however still appear real enough

to look extremely creepy if you unexpectedly open the box. In all

honesty I am pretty darn sure that this box is the reason our

last two housekeepers quit. On an associated note I will promise

never again to bitch about the price of Norm's latex doves. They

are a truly superb product even if the eyes do fall out.

Resolution #4

I will once and for all go through my act and remove any stock

lines that are in there. It is beneath my dignity to still be

doing them in my act. This will not apply to any gags that I

wrote for my act and have become stock lines since I started to

sell my performance DVD's to magicians. I will remove the

offending lines and replace them with something witty that can

eventually become a laugh line. This is the way that contemporary

comedy is created. I will however preserve my Robert Orben joke

books as prized magic memorabilia. In fact I might just keep my

Milton Berle joke books handy just in case I break this

resolution. You never know.

Resolution #5

I will force myself to realize that I never am going to perform

any illusions again. I was never that great at them to begin with

and only performed them in the 80s and 90s because everyone

expected them. Plus my back is still in pretty bad shape since

that era and I couldn't stand having to read any more of those

old magazines in the chiropractor's office. If I weaken in my

resolve I will repeat my mantra 33 times 'Five minutes of comedy

can replace 75 pounds of excess airline baggage.'

Resolution #6

I will throw away that old tuxedo in the back of my closet that I

never wear. If I hadn't figured it out before I had better do so

now- not everyone really does look better in a tux! More often a

magician in a tux is either a cliché- don't get me started on

jumpsuits! In a tux you often get mistaken for a Maitre 'D and

even worse sometimes a pit boss. No matter how good Lance Burton

looks in formal wear I am never going to look that good. An

expensive well cut and tailored suit is going to make me look

much more contemporary and well dressed.

Resolution #7

I must stop buying items from Joe Steven's catalogue just because

they look so cool with that picture of Joe holding them or

standing next to them. I also have to be much more discerning

about believing Joe's quotes about his own items. Just because he

says that this trick is a new classic and every magician should

own one doesn't mean it is actually the case - I am beginning to

think he may not be totally objective. Make a mental note to

check Levent's website for his new releases as they really are

working routines from a real pro.

Resolution #8

Stop making snarky comments in my columns about issues in the

magic world. The art of self-deception is at least as important

as fooling an audience and it is best I keep that in mind at all

times. On a related note I must remember to book more dates

performing to all magician audiences so that I can get a more

realistic idea of what lay audiences will enjoy and appreciate in

my act.

A very Happy New Year to everyone and my sincere wishes for a

joyful and productive upcoming year.

7. Trouble With Kid's Names - #149 - Kyle Peron

Here is an interesting scenario that may sound all too familiar

to a lot of you. You are at an event and performing a routine

that utilizes a child. The child comes up to a nice applause and

you proceed to ask the child his or her name. The name that comes

out from the child is one in which Klingon makes more sense. You

ask the child again and you state the name wrong. This then

provokes the child to become the Hulk and scream his name at the

threshold of pain. You then resort to trying not to mention the

child's name at all by simply dancing around it.

Sound familiar? I think we all have experienced this before. This

is what I refer to as the "Trouble with Kid's Names" syndrome.

There are many reasons why this may happen. It could be that the

child is speaking too softly, not pronouncing the word correctly,

you are having a hard time hearing the child or the fact that the

name is just not common. As I get older, I have started to

realize that the names like Mike, Chris and James have become

boring and new names like Latoya and Iona have become the popular

trend.

Because I am a deaf entertainer, I have problems hearing the kid's

name and any helper that comes up on stage to assist. I read lips

very well and have ever since a young child. However, reading

kid's lips is harder because they do not pronounce the words as

well as they should. Any ways, I have always had problems hearing

kid's names when they come up to help. Because of this problem I

was faced with, it allowed me to start coming up with creative

solutions to solve it.

The solution...."Hello My name is" stickers. Sounds silly but it

works wonderfully. Before the show starts I have them with me and

I have the parents and the children put them on. In fact when I

get there, I often give them to the client to hand out as kids

come in.

I tell the client that it is an easy way for the kids to all get

to know who each other and also so the ones who do not know, do

not feel left out. It also is a great way for the adults to get

to know each other as well. Often times the adults are meeting

each other for the first time. I am also honest with them in that

it makes it easier for me to select my helpers without

mispronouncing a name.

They usually are more than pleased with this approach and

sometimes wonder why they did not think of it themselves. They

always help me out with it and I never have any problems. It then

becomes super easy to spot kids in the audience. I can then call

and select the child to come up by their name on their name tag.

Kids love hearing their name called.

It can also play to a larger school or venue as well. Here is how

you do it. You send the school a promotional show package a week

or so ahead of time. This gets passed out to the teachers. Inside

are the stickers. They are told to pass them out to their

students before the show. It makes it easier.

Now if you really want to have fun with it, and want the kids to

really WANT to wear them, place a number on each one. Then you

can use it as a raffle at the show for a magic kit or something

of value or importance.

Now if you are a savvy marketer, you can create your own

customized name stickers. These can be printed easily and cheaply

at many online digital printers. On these can have your website

or contact information and your name. Now it becomes something

that everyone is wearing that brands you at all times. People

cannot help but look at it.

This becomes a very easy solution to a problem I was having due

to my handicap. However, this solution can also help anyone out.

Instead of trying to guess what the name is, you can handle it in

such a way that adds both value to your show and also value to

the client as well. I hope it helps you and that it can be a

possible solution that elevates your magic.

The dream – what enables a young kid in New York to realize his lifetime dream? In particular, how is it possible for a youngster whose love is coin magic to use this as a vehicle to realize his dream of appearing at the world-famous Magic Castle in Hollywood and traveling around the world, doing magic with a handful of coins and a few props?

First of all, one must have the favor of the Coin Gods. Consider that our young hero was born 75 years to the day after the birth of the legendary coin magician John Ramsay. However, it was only when he was age ten and Ramsay had just passed away that "Maja" claimed him as a lifelong subject, when a friend of his father plucked a coin from behind his ear. He got the usual magic sets and toyed with various types of magic, including cards, but nothing really ignited the creative fires. Then, at age sixteen, he found Bobo's classic book Modern Coin Magic – a book that was published the year he was born. Suddenly, the creative motivation and inspiration was provided. The spark ignited the flame.

John Nicholls Booth, 1912 – 2009

In 1998, at the age of 86, Dr. John Booth wrote: "I tried as a magician, cinematographer, lecturer, and Unitarian clergyman to bring people together in a more just, enjoyable, and harmonious society." His Linking Ring column, "Memoirs of a Magician's Ghost" from 1963 to 2000, comprises nearly 1,700 pages of autobiography and a history of conjuring and the magical characters he had met over the years. The "Update" section of this January issue includes a remembrance of John from Ben Robinson, a long-time friend with whom Booth collaborated on three books.

This tricky 1940 photo of John Booth appeared in the September 1996 issue of MAGIC. Captured in 1/1000th of a second, the image of 29-year-old Booth seems to take on a new dimension when viewed upside-down.

Conveying the Magic

In the old days, men and women had to look for potential dates the old fashioned way: by interviewing three unseen strangers on The Dating Game. But thanks to modern advances in technology and the ridiculousness of reality television, there are new ways of selecting a partner. For example, watching them glide by on a conveyor belt like dim sum in a Chinese automat.

John Bannon's latest, Bullets After Dark, is a two-DVD set loaded with card tricks aimed at every skill level. Here's an abridged version of John Lovick's review:

Over four years ago, I wrote a review of John Bannon's charming little book, Dear Mr. Fantasy. I called it a gem and said that it was the first magic book in nearly a decade that I had read from cover to cover like a novel, in a single sitting.

Bullets After Dark, Bannon's new two-disc DVD, includes some material from Dear Mr. Fantasy, some revised material from that book, and some brand new ideas. There is a lot of interesting card material here for the pasteboard enthusiast and/or Bannon fan.

These DVDs are not discs that you will watch over and over again for the entertainment value. Bannon is a very low-key performer who uses minimalist presentations, and most of the performances are for a single spectator who is reluctant to respond on camera in the artificial environment of a studio. In other words, it's the exact opposite of an L&L project. But this is not the kind of DVD you buy for entertainment. You buy it to study interesting and deceptive card magic, to learn and gain inspiration.

There are fifteen tricks and one sleight on the two discs; some of the tricks are combined into two- and three-phase routines, making a total of eleven items on the discs.

In addition, sprinkled throughout are short segments in which Bannon answers questions about creating magic, the faro shuffle, the Chicago session (his legendary weekly meetings with Dave Solomon and Simon Aronson), routining, magicians who have influenced his work, mixing math and magic, finding presentational angles for card tricks, and other topics.

None of the items here are knuckle busters, making this a good video set for all skill levels. If you love card magic, and even if you're just getting started, I'm sure there are at least a couple of items here that you can put into your repertoire, and a couple more that'll be fun to just play around with.

Joseph Gabriel
Stage: Johnny Carson, kingpin of American late-night television,
introduced Joseph Gabriel, and what transpired on the Tonight
Show stage for the next several minutes was sufficient to amaze

enthused. One of the classiest magic acts you're going to see in
a long time! The best
I've seen!

This was Carson's reaction after witnessing Joseph Gabriel's
first appearance on the Tonight Show in 1983. Over the next
several years, Joseph would appear a total of seven times with
Carson. Gabriel has appeared on virtually every major television
variety show, most notably his televised Command Performance for
President Reagan. Months
later, February 1984, Joseph Gabriel made his Las Vegas debut
fittingly in the most lavish show in town, the Lido de Paris at
the Stardust Hotel.

Shawn Farquhar (Canada)
Close-Up: Shawn has performed and lectured for the world's best
magic events including London's famed Magic Circle, Siegfried and
Roy's and Japan's World Magic Seminars, Club Magico Italiano's
125 Anniversary, the Australian Magic Circle's Centenary and the
world's largest magic convention in Blackpool, England. In July
of 2009 he was named Grand Prix World Champion of Close Up magic
in Beijing, China at the 24th FISM World Championships of Magic.

He is also the only magician in history to win first prize in
both Close Up and Stage from the International Brotherhood of
Magicians and is proud to be a member of the Order of Merlin.

afternoon production show in the history of Las Vegas. Keep
watching this fast-rising star as she continues living her dream
and pushing the boundaries of Magical Entertainment.

Marty Putz
Stage: Marty Putz is one of the world's hottest and most popular
exponents of bizarre and unusual comedy. Taking the label "prop
comic" to new heights, Marty Putz entertains his audiences with
some of his "inventions" .like the "chiropractic machine" (a
device which stretches his head and neck several feet in the
air), and the "rodent projectile unit" (a hand held cannon which
propels a pet hamster through the air and into a waiting target).
A giant inflatable "Elvis" suit, in one of its many forms, has
become his trademark.

Ice McDonald
Stage: The words Illusion, Captivation, Enchantment describe the
thrilling experience of The King of Cool -- Kenrick "ICE"
McDonald. An international award-winning magician, he has
established a strong reputation with his grand illusions
including doves and the spectacular spectacular out of thin air
of his Mighty Macaw. Recent appearances on The Tonight Show with
Jay Leno and in his own production, The African-American Master
of Magic testify to his artistry.

Lecture: Learn some of the tools of the trade when working with
doves from one of the best in the business.

Mickey Mak (China)
Stage: Mickey Mak is a rising star in China whose most recent
competition in Shanghai netted him a silver medal for his
artistic, rapid fire magic with white parasols. Energy, youth and
surprise are all in store for the audience as Mickey makes his
North American debut.

Eric Buss
Stage: Tremendous, Sensational, Beautiful... I've never seen
anything like it! said David Letterman of Eric Buss. His
innovative and high energy brand of comedy has earned him some of
the industry's top awards, and a reputation as one of the
funniest acts working today. Eric is an imaginative performer
with a knack for funny. Eric Buss invites the audience into his
world where hysterical antics are brought to life.

Kenji Minemura (Japan)
Stage: FISM World Champion Manipulation 2000 & 3rd Prize
Manipulation 2003 (Japan) brings to the stage an entirely new act
that combines dance, illusion, and mystery using a sketch book.
Kenji is one of Asia's most talented and imaginative magicians
performing today.

Rich Bloch
Stage (finalists competition night): Rich's love of theater, and
his position as magic consultant to the Folger Shakespeare
Theater at the Library of Congress, led Orson Welles to tap Rich
as his writer for a TV special, "Time and Chance". Rich and
Welles collaborated on that as well as numerous Welles
appearances on the Johnny Carson and Merv Griffin shows. Rich is
also an inventor of illusions, with magicians all over the globe
utilizing his techniques and apparatus, including David
Copperfield, Siegfried and Roy, and during their lifetimes, Harry
Blackstone Jr. and Doug Henning. Orson Welles called Rich "An
Edison of Magic." But magic performing is never far from the
center of Rich's heart. He performs regularly as a featured guest
in reviews at Las Vegas Golden Nugget, Sahara, and Flamingo
Hotels, with appearances, as well, at the Tropicana, Rio, Monte
Carlo, Venetian and Mirage hotels.

4. More Remarkable Magic #19 - Susan Lewin

Nick Lewin is on a ship in South America without Internet
satellite connection. This is a guest post by his wife Susan.

"Magicians are like kittens: They all do the same things." I've
made this statement time and time again to explain the oddity of
living with a magic man. It has now been shortened to "kittens."
I'll flash a look at Nick and say "Kittens," and he knows exactly
what I mean. Magicians have a lot in common and I suspect that
their significant others do as well.

Let me illustrate the point. On Friday I received a lovely call
from Lupe Nielsen. I had ordered Nick a set of Chinese Sticks for
Christmas to add to his ever growing collection of Chinese Sticks
sitting in his magic cupboard. He desperately wanted the ones
with Norm's specialized stickers on them and I thought, "Why not?
What's another set? It will give him something to play with and
critique on Christmas Day."

When Lupe called I feared that she was going to tell me that our
credit card was over the limit. (This brings me to an aside: Why
have I given our credit card carte blanche to another magician? I
must be crazy? Heck I know I am: I'm the spouse of a magician.
"Kittens.") Instead she said that the "sticks" were not going to
be remade by the original crafter, but instead the new ones would
be produced by Norm himself with various improvements and
stickers. "Hey, so much the better I thought. If Norm is making
them there's a chance Nick might perform them."

However, she said, there is one problem. I intently listened.
"It's the tubing. We can't find the correct tubing." "Oh my god,"
I said, "Nick is always looking for tubing" (and tassels and yarn
and green Coca Cola bottles and USA Today newspapers, and chewing
gum with silver wrappers, and Crown Royal bags and the list goes
on). I very excitedly said to Lupe, "If Nick is home comatose on
the couch from a road trip and I say I'm going to Ace Hardware or
Home Depot he is up and dressed in a matter of seconds saying, 'I
have to buy tubing'." "Kittens!" He then purchases a bag of
mysterious items and has a big smile on his face as he says, "Do
you know how much this bag would have cost in a magic store?
Probably five hundred dollars."

I must add that once home the said tubing it is never the correct
tubing. He then proceeds to slice it on a record album balanced
on top of his legs with an Exacto knife into misshapen pieces.
Whatever project Nick is working on he proudly says, "I can make
this prop myself and then I can sell it. This is just a
prototype." Yeah, sure. Every magician I know wants a small
plastic box with black duct tape and misshapen tubing. They
probably do. "Kittens!"

Over the years I've learned a lot from living with a magician and
this December marks our 36 year of married life. Hey, who's
counting? That would be me (and Nick). Nick is on a trip in South
America on various five star ships, and we are meeting up in
Miami for a couple of days of R & R before he heads back down to
Limon. Fearing a "Trains, Planes and Automobiles" holiday if he
ventured to come back to Las Vegas for 24 hours, I opted to use
frequent flier miles and meet him at the Airport Marriott.
Perhaps on our day off we can venture to Home Depot for another
tubing adventure or to South Beach to pick up some sand.

Let me end this post by stating "Kittens!" You know who you are
so why fight it? Let's all enjoy the fun. P.S. Please don't
mention that I've ordered the Chinese Sticks from the Nielsens.

5. Magician as Superhero - #145 - Kyle Peron

It's a bird..it's a plane...it's Magic Man!!??? Able to find a
chosen card in a single cut. More powerful than a 5 year old kid
on a sugar rush. Ok this is a bit silly and I hope you are at
least laughing. But I wanted to mention it as a segue into the
notion of the magician as seen as a superhero type.

Let's think about this for a minute. As a magician we make the
impossible seem possible. We change fantasy into reality and we
defy the laws of physics. Like a superhero, we can make people
float or fly. We can walk through solid objects and seem to have
the power to read people's minds. Sound a lot like a superhero to
me. But do we often see ourselves this way? Do we fully
understand just how important it is to know this and how to use
it properly?

Like a superhero, we also become one when we perform as this
metamorphosis comes over us. We often change from our daily
persona into this new character that the audience is seeing and
experiencing on stage. Now each superhero is very well defined.
They know who they are and who they are not. What they are able
to do directly ties into their character. Their abilities and how
they use them stems also from knowing their character. The
character will act and react based on knowing exactly who they
are and what they are about.

A magician can learn from this. If we are like superheroes, then
we to should have a well defined character on stage. We should be
able to know who we are when we perform and what we are trying to
convey to the audience. But this also means we should also know
what we cannot do. We should immediately know that an effect
simply would not be good in the show simply because your
character would never use something like it. Likewise, how we
talk and the patter we use should also reflect who we are on
stage.

As a magical entertainer, we all have abilities or powers to make
it appear that we can do things others simply cannot. But like
any superhero, we also have strengths and weaknesses. Every
superhero you may have seen or read about always seems to have
something that gives them their power. They also have something
that makes them weaker.

It is fascinating to think that magicians also have this strength
and weakness. Interesting enough our main strength and weakness
comes from the same source... the audience. Think about it for
just a second and reflect back on the many shows you have done.

When we experience a great audience, a strange thing happens to
many of us. A wonderful audience we feed off of. We get better
and stronger through feeding off of their reactions. The more
they like what we are doing, the better we become. We give them
even more of ourselves.

However, the same audience can also be our superheroes' weakness.
A bad or dead audience can often drain our energy and make us
perform a bit more hindered. Suddenly our facial expressions may
not be as expressive. Maybe our patter changes and our adlibs or
improvisation stop. We seem to over think situations trying to
figure out how to win the audience back. Like Kryptonite, we feel
weak and sometimes helpless.

So what does this all tell us? I think it is first important to
understand the role we play to an audience who sees and watches
us. To many, we are something special. They may have never seen a
live magician before and what we do is fascinating to them. We
have this amazing gift that many do not have and even more have
never experienced up close before.

With this power comes great responsibility. It means we need to
be true to ourselves and to our characters we represent on stage.
Like a superhero is also means being humble. Having this amazing
ability serves you no purpose if you are going to have an ego and
not use it properly.

It also means that we can have an amazing impact on people that
come across us. We need to be a professional at all times and not
just when we feel like it. If we have the power to do the
impossible, we also have the power to place a smile on someone's
face and leave them with an experience they will remember for a
long time.

8. Traveling The World With Paul Romhany

Wow, what a very busy time we are having here in Asia. I knew it
would be busy and Natalie and I would need to be in peak
condition. There are nights where we are performing three to four
shows in different venues and for different companies. This is no
easy task. We have been working out at the gym keeping ourselves
in shape so we can handle this hectic performance schedule. It's
often something we don't think about as performers, our health.
It's one of the most important parts of our job when we get
busy - we forget how to eat right and stay in shape. The only
reason I am aware of how important it is, is because I have done
this type of schedule before and know to do the best we need to
be mentally and physically capable of doing it.

Tonight we have another four corporate gigs - fortunately I have
a great team helping me. The schedule is very tight with the
first show at 7.45pm at one hotel. As soon as the gig is over, I
have to go offstage and have about 2 minutes to re-set my show
and head to the next hotel. En route I will re-apply my make-up
and when we arrive we head to the stage area where my stage hand
will set up my bag - and before I know it I'm on stage again.
This will happen four times tonight. By the final show I am
completely exhausted and you would have thought I just stepped
out of a sauna.

The audiences here in Asia are also very different than you would
find anywhere else. Don't expect people to stop and listen to
what you say, as they are busy eating and getting up and down.
You are usually one of many different acts and things happening
during a long evening for them. Fortunately my act works well as
I don't need to worry about language barrier - I am able to
perform my Chaplin act and it's visual enough for them to watch.
These are not theatre shows, but corporate shows where people are
seated in groups of ten. They can range from 300 people up to
well over 1000.

Your show needs to be able to pack small enough so you can walk
off stage pretty much and it's ready to go again - not have to
worry about language issues, a lot of your standard magic one
liners just wouldn't work, and play to the largest audience. It
certainly isn't an easy gig, however I have to admit we are
really having a great time and my agent here is doing a wonderful
job.

Yesterday was one of the highlights for me as I performed and
lectured for an event put on by magician Jeremy Pei. It is called
Redefine Magic: The Gathering and is a one day convention held in
Singapore.

What a great job he did with almost 100 magicians in attendance.
There were various magic dealers, myself included and
performances from some well known Singapore magicians. I missed
the evening gala show because I had a gig myself, however I did
get to open the convention with a short version of my Chaplin
Show. What a great chance for me to meet so many magicians and
see some friends I haven't seen for some time.

My hat off to Jeremy for pulling off such an event and his
amazing team of helpers.

10. The Magical Adventures Of Eric DeCamps

Well it's been a while since my last email and it's been way to
long since I've updated my website (www.ericdecamps.com) with
some new content.

As some of you already know, 2009 has been an incredible year for
me. I have had the opportunity to travel quite a bit, perform my
magic in new venues and make a lot of new friends.

In the last few months I've been to Montreal, Niagara Falls,
Buffalo, Vancouver, Charlotte, San Francisco, Los Angeles and
Chicago. Not to mention regional trips to Philadelphia, New
Haven, Carlyle and Boston. Whew. I racked up a lot of air, road
and even nautical miles!

In September, I was inducted as the new Dean of Parent Assembly #
1 of the Society of American Magicians. It's difficult for me to
express how honored I am that this prestigious organization has
entrusted me with this extraordinary title of distinction and
lifetime position. Next to being the National Dean of the
organization, it is the highest distinction that the organization
can bestow on a member.

The Board of Directors of Parent Assembly # 1 said that they
wanted a Dean that is active not just in the magic community but
who is active in sharing the art of magic with the general public
and the community at large. A person who embodies the ideas and
principles of the assembly and who would serve as our ambassador
of good will for our fraternity and our craft. In succeeding my
dear and old friend Sam Schwatrz as Dean, I know I have some very
big shoes to fill.

Additionally in September, I managed to make my life-long dream
of performing at the world famous Hollywood Magic Castle a
reality. Not only did I manage to perform at the Magic Castle,
they allowed me to perform the entire program of my one man show,
Eric DeCamps PURE MAGIC - A Performance of Contemporary
Conjuring. Not just a single time but three times at the Peller
Theater. To say it was a thrill for me is a huge understatement.

I would like to personally thank Max Maven for this amazing
opportunity. I would also like to thank Matt Patton and Ben Roman
for all of their help and for making the experience such a
wonderful one. I would be remiss if I did not also recognize all
of the Magic Castle members who supported my show, thank you!

13. Broken Wand - Harry Wise

Famed Spook Show magician Harry Wise (Orlando-Sanford, Florida)
passed away this week a victim of stomach cancer. He was 75.
Harry toured the USA in the 1950's with a show of flying ghosts,
stage monsters walking into the audience, and a stage filled with
magic that goes bump in the night...not to mention corny pun
filled jokes.

He was honored three years ago in An Evening of Recognition,
telling of his adventures while the audience sat on the edge of
their seats. In the early '60's Harry was television's "Mr.
Magic" and was quite a celebrity around Central Florida. To walk
inside of his house one had to walk sideways in fear of knocking
over his collection of magic, magazines, newspapers and "junk".

His front porch was a year round shrine to Halloween, his
favorite time of the year. More about Harry can be read in a
recently published book, Weird Florida. With Harry's passing goes
another chapter in the history of Florida as well as the colorful
era of Spook Shows.

I have been a professional magician for nearly 30 years. However,
I have always "Kept My Day Job" because it was a decent gig and
it paid the mortgage, paid for a daughter's college, etc. You
know the drill.

Well my life changed in April of this year when my employer of 24
years eliminated my position. I am supposed to say I was
devastated but I actually said, "It's a relief". The "gig" was
old and after some soul-searching, I felt fate was telling me to
go after the act. Everyone has told me to go into magic over the
years, so here was my opportunity. But, I also realized I needed
tools to get the job done. One thing I needed was to get
organized.

While working for the company, a girl in the Training Department
developed a database to keep track of all the meetings. This was
a complex task. It was similar in some ways to a magic business
in that you were sending many letters, getting people booked,
sending confirmations, keeping track of flights, billing them,
archiving their participation with scores, etc. I decided I
needed software to run my new full-time magic business.

That's when I called Paul Hinkelman, a great friend that I had
worked with who always encouraged my magic and happened to be in
business for himself as a consultant and developer of business
system software. His business' name is BIZassist, LLC. He
actually taught Patsy how to develop her database. I asked for
his help to develop software that would not only help me organize
my magic, but would also help me with the hard stuff. the
business of magic.

With Paul's knowledge of business systems and my experience in
magic, over a six month period and several lunches, we crafted a
software package called Organizational Magic. This unique custom
software program addresses a magician's need for structure. It
provides the tools to help manage customer and networking
contacts; provides date-sensitive To-Do's linked to the contact
list; imports and manages contact lists for preparing direct mail
and email blasts; catalogs tricks with respect to Audience,
Participation, Venue, Length, Music, Props and Notes; groups the
tricks into logical "show" packages with common traits; helps
manage customer event planning; and even keeps track of billable
expenses. And it's easy. I open it every day.

I told Paul I would get the word out and offer it to my magic
friends. That was the deal, my help customizing for his
programming work. Now that I am finally on my way to a "magical"
success story, Paul is making a free 14-day trial of
